Chocolate Boutique – Parnell, Auckland

Haven’t posted much lately because I’ve been busy with work and haven’t got the time to go on food trips. (sad face) but the other week I caught up with one of my mates from Uni and we went to Chocolate Boutique in Parnell. They have so many desserts to choose from it took me ages to decide on which one to get. In the end, I decided to get the raspberry chocolate tart and for my drink, I got the jaffa spider.

Some of you may be thinking “what the hell is a jaffa spider?” well “spider” is a drink that consists of ice cream and soda while “jaffa” is a flavour that is chocolate mixed with orange. So this jaffa spider is basically chocolate ice cream with fanta (orange flavoured soda). I love anything jaffa flavoured so I loved this drink. If you haven’t tried mixing chocolate and orange before but you’re curious about how it would taste like, this is definitely the perfect drink to try because you get to mix the drink yourself so you can adjust the drink according to your liking.

This is the raspberry chocolate tart. I was disappointed with this one because there were no raspberries present anywhere in this tart. I was expecting at least a few fresh raspberries on top but as you can see, there were none. So, it was just a chocolate tart. But nevertheless, it was still delicious and it wasn’t sickly sweet.

Overall, their food is above average but the service is just meh. There were four or five staff members but when we went in, no one even greeted us or even smiled at us and that’s a really important factor for me. But I’d still go back because I really want to try their other desserts.

Lewis Road Creamery Chocolate Milk

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Haven’t posted in a while because I had exams and I was busy the past couple of weeks trying to find work and guess what? I had 4 job offers! If only I could accept them all…

Anyway, onto the main topic of this post… This chocolate milk has been the talk of the town for weeks. Everyone’s raving about it and it’s always sold out within minutes and some groceries have a limit of 1 or 2 bottles per customer and have security guards just to make sure that people won’t hoard. It has also come to the point wherein people sell these on Trademe (it’s like ebay in New Zealand) and people actually bid and buy it for double or maybe even triple the actual retail price. I myself was always on the look out for it as well just to know how good this chocolate milk actually is. I was just strolling in the mall waiting for my interview when I saw someone come out of the grocery holding a bottle of this chocolate milk so I instantly went inside and grabbed one. There were only 2 bottles left including the one that I got so I guess luck was on my side that day.

First impression was that it was quite pricey for a small bottle (I paid $4.30 for a 300ml bottle). It took a lot of will power for me not to taste it until I get home because I wanted my siblings to have a taste as well. I must say that it is different from the other chocolate milks that are being sold here in New Zealand but it’s not THAT great. I mean, I understand what the hype is all about but I’ve tasted better chocolate milks in the Philippines. I don’t think it’s worth buying the small bottle just ’cause it’s too pricey. I’d buy the 750ml one though.

That’s my take on this most raved about chocolate milk. Have you tasted it? Do you think it’s worth the hype? Let me know! 🙂

Coocup – Auckland CBD

Processed with VSCOcam with f1 preset Ate lunch all by myself the other day at Coocup because I had no one to eat with (cries) but luckily, my yummy food kept me company (who needs someone when you have great food?) haha. I ate at Coocup, which is an Asian fusion restaurant. They serve a mixture of Japanese and Korean food with some pasta choices as well. Processed with VSCOcam with f1 preset Their place is small but unique because they play anime  shows on their wall to keep their customers entertained. Processed with VSCOcam with k3 preset Here’s their menu and the different types of sauces that you can put on your food. You can also see that their food is made to order so you can really be sure that they only serve fresh food.Processed with VSCOcam with f3 preset I’ve tried a few of their dishes before but this hot spicy pork is my favourite so if you like spicy food and can’t decide on which of their dishes to get, definitely give this a try. As you can see, they serve their food in a takeaway cup which is so convenient especially if you haven’t finished your food yet and you’re already running late for Uni or work. You can just ask for a lid if you want to save it for later or you can eat it while walking. Would recommend this to everyone and I’m giving Coocup two thumbs up.

Popa’s Pretzels – Queen Street, Auckland CBD

pretzel1

I’ve tried Popa’s Pretzel twice already. The first time was with my brother. I was a bit early for class the other day and I still had not eaten my lunch. My brother also had half an hour left before his class so we decided to get a snack. He suggested this new pretzel place near Uni and being the food adventurer that I am, I immediately said yes.

They have a lot of flavours and toppings to choose from that would really satisfy everyone. Whether you’re craving for something sweet or savoury, Popa’s pretzels has it all but what really made me happy is the fact that they cook the pretzels fresh (you can actually see them making the pretzels once you’ve ordered) and I think they make their own dough. Although we had to wait for 5-10 minutes for it, I didn’t actually mind because I’d rather have freshly made, straight out from the oven pretzels than just getting the ones sitting on the counter for God knows how long.pretzel3

On my first try, my brother and I went for a sweet pretzel which was the chocolate and walnut one. We both really loved it and would definitely recommend for all you chocolate lovers out there. For my second visit, I opted for a savoury one which was filled with cream cheese (the one at the bottom) while Paolo tried the custard and berries filled pretzel (the one at the top) and I must say, I can’t wait to try their other flavours because not one of the three pretzels that I’ve tried has let me down.

pretzel4Oh and here’s a photo to give you an idea how huge their pretzels are. For $4.50, you get a pretzel as big as my face lol. I think it really is worth a try if ever you find yourself walking along Queen Street.

OKO Dessert Kitchen – Aotea Square, Auckland CBD

OKO1

This dessert place has only opened last month (if I’m not mistaken) and it has already received rave reviews. One that really caught my attention was this review in Zomato saying that “it could rival Milse as the best dessert place in Auckland Central” and if you’ve been to Milse, you know that it is a big thing.

OKO2

Unfortunately, I can’t remember what the names of these desserts are but I can say that they are absolutely divine! They’re not sickly sweet, which I really love and they have different “dimensions” in them if you know what I mean.

OKO3I also got a vanilla brownie milkshake in which they used Movenpick ice cream and I really loved it! It was quite expensive for me but I guess since they use Movenpick ice cream, it justifies the price.

I think this could really rival Milse but they still have to up their game if they want to beat Milse. I wish they have more dessert choices but they’ve only just started so it’s understandable.

Johnny Barr’s Fresh Food Bistro – Wynyard Quarter, Auckland CBD

Paolo and I went to Johnny Barr’s for our Anniversary brunch last week. We bought a voucher from Grabone which was $20 for any two dishes in their menu. We looked at their menu first before buying the voucher and made sure that we could order something that we would really like. After buying the voucher, I then read the reviews on Zomato and saw that some people gave a negative rating because they waited for their food for about an hour or so. I kind of got nervous after reading those reviews as I don’t want to spoil our Anniversary brunch by waiting for an hour for our food to arrive but thank God our experience turned out pretty great.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetJohnny Barr’s is a nautical themed bistro which was appropriate as their place is in Viaduct. I didn’t get a lot of photos as we were seated at the very front of the restaurant and didn’t have a nice view.

Eggs Benedict with bacon

Paolo ordered the eggs benedict with bacon. He had a choice between bacon, ham, and salmon which I found really great because having choices is one of the best things in the planet. I had a taste of his meal and I must say, it was pretty darn good. I’ve tasted a lot of versions of eggs benedict and this one is definitely in my top 5.

Breakfast burrito

I tried their breakfast burrito which contained scrambled eggs, cheese, salsa, tomatoes, sour cream, guacamole and also a choice between bacon, sausage, and black beans. I chose sausage because I was really craving some sausages that day for some reason. This dish was pretty decent, nothing out of the ordinary, but the sausages were really tasty and it made me really full because I didn’t feel hungry until 7pm.

Caramel latte & snickers milkshake

Now onto the drinks. Paolo had the caramel latte and I ordered the snickers milkshake and let me just say… Their snickers milkshake is the BEST damn milkshake that I’ve ever tasted! Although I didn’t like the presentation because it was too plain, the flavour was just… HEAVEN. It costs about $7 but it’s really worth the price as it was huge and really YUMMY. A MUST TRY. I would honestly go back just for this milkshake.

All in all, we had a great experience. The staff was really nice and friendly and the food was great considering we only paid a total amount of $23.50 for all of it. I would definitely go back and try their dinner menu next time.

Momotea – Meadowlands, Auckland

Processed with VSCOcam with e6 presetHad lunch here today because Paolo and I were really craving Momotea food. We eat at Momotea at least once a month because the food is really cheap and yummy plus their milk teas and milkshakes are the bomb dot com.
